Francois Couperin: Harpsichord Pieces

Francis Couperin, nicknamed 'Le Grand', is perhaps the greatest of all French composers for the Harpsichord. He is quoted as saying that for each of his pieces he always had 'a definate idea in mind: (and) the titles correspond to these ideas'. Each piece is designed as a kind of portrait; not only persons are thus represented, but moods and emotions as well as objetcs and incidents.

JS Bach: Harpsichord Concertos (Egarr/Manze)

J. S. Bach’s seven harpsichord concertos and the “Triple” concerto BWV 1044 span the total range of Baroque experience: from the tempestuous élan of BWV 1052, through the disquiet and anger of BWV 1056, to the joy and elation of BWV 1055. Richard Egarr and The Academy of Ancient Music, led by Andrew Manze, present these masterpieces in radically fresh, intimate readings charged with dramatic intensity.

JS Bach: Harpsichord Works (Egarr)

"Richard Egarr is the doyen of English harpsichordists at present, if one is judging by the kind of qualities that have historically separated the great from the good: uninhibited virtuosity...This is playing of real stature. This exquisite recital ends with the mature, unfinished Fantasia and Fugue in C minor and Egarr's own reworking of the Fugue, compelled more in a spirit of curiosity and homage than projected as a finite solution in Bach's absence."
