The fruit was harvested from four different locations from low yielding vines in the Yarra valley. The different parcels of grapes were processed using either whole bunches and air bag pressing or crushed and basket pressed – the resulting juice being oxidatively handled and racked to French oak barrels after overnight settling. Overshadowed by its red brother, the Rawsons Retreat Chardonnay is a testament to economies of scale - Penfolds, through its contacts all over Australia, has access to some of the finest Chardonnay grapes in the nation. The top of the food chain is the $100+ a bottle Penfolds Yattarna, but the grape quality weaves its way right down the range. I'm not saying this is a $100 Chardonnay squeezed into a $6 package, but the fruit quality is rather astounding considering the price, with real varietal fruit flavours, without the heavy, cloying buttery characters of old school Chard.

Meursault, which lies to the south of Volnay, and immediately north of Puligny-Montrachet, is the social and financial center of the Côte des Blancs, which many consider the source of the noblest expressions of the Chardonnay grape. Domaine Mikulskis .5-hectare vineyards that produce its Bourgogne Blanc are comprised of two parcels, one with 30 year old vines, and the other with vines of 55 years. Both lie just outside the Meursault appellation boundary, very close to the Clos de la Barre.

Chardonnay is a vigorous, heavy cropping variety with medium sized bunches. Bunches have tightly packed berries forming a single cluster not like loosely spaced Shiraz bunches. A ripe Chardonnay berry is gold yellow in colour with plenty of juice. Berries are small, fragile, thin-skinned and require care during harvest to avoid oxidisation. This Chardonnay celebrates the growers who have contributed their collective labours towards realising such a vision. This wine was made using fruit from Noel and Cherly Heidenreich and Marcus and Roslyn Schulz.

A much more complex wine. It’s got some kind of tropical, hints of gooseberry flavours but some oak as well. They have tried to do something interesting with the grapes here. It’s a terrific wine with great depth of flavour and complexity on the palate. Some richness as well. A marvellous wine. Some baked lemon pudding flavours.

Both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes were picked at night. The grapes were then crushed and de-stemmed immediately to ensure minimum skin contact and phenolic extraction. The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were fermented separately under cool conditions to ensure delicacy of the base wine, these base wines were then blended to obtain the desired characters. The base wine was re-fermented and left on lees for six months to maximise mouthfeel and complexity of the wine.
