Birthday Villa was named after Birthday Mine at Drummond - discovered on Queen Victoria's Birthday. It has 4 acres of old vines, planted in the 1960s. The vineyard was originally planted with gewurtztraminer; about one acre of vines have been grafted to cabeernet sauvignon in recent years (1980s).

Varietal 100% Gewurztraminer Closure Screw Cap Size 750ml Alc/Vol 13% Enjoy Now - 2008 The first release under Tim Knappstein's new label and each named after a different sword- this one aptly "The Rapier" for its steely style. This is a restrained gewürztraminer with sappy- rose petal and pear perfume- all with an undercurrent of more to evolve given a short time in bottle. The palate shows more of this promise with textural richness- lingering flavours and a fine acid balance. Gewurztraminer is a variety we should drink more of especially with lots of Asian flavours.

The Trimbach family has a wine-making history stretching back almost 400 years, the firm having come into existence in 1626. It was not until the late 19th century, however, under the leadership of Frédéric-Emile Trimbach, that the business began to really expand. Success came when he exhibited the wines at an international fair in Brussels in 1898, to much acclaim. Since the days of Frédéric-Emile the house of Trimbach has remained a family run business, based in Ribeauvillé, for much of this time...

Quite a good Gewurzt. Lovely Gewurztraminer lychee ginger notes. Big nose. Firm palate. Quite fleshy but with a core to it. Steely, rosewater flavours. Long. Great varietal characters. Excellent balance. A little bit of acidity. Well structured. Very drinkable wine. That soft palate and low acidity changed the dimensions of the dish radically allowing the tomatoes and the shallot greens to emerge. Nice match. Very spicy Gewurztraminer varietal characters work to add a dimension to the mousse. There...

PALATE: A viscous wine, with cinnamon, lime and citrus aromas carrying through to the palate. Refreshing and rich with remarkable fruit acidity and floral fragrances, make this an excellent accompaniment to cuisine.

This gewurz falls into the richer style-camp with deeper colour (owing to aging in larger old French oak), and intense (though not overly pungent) aromatics of lychee and candied peel. These elements line up with some more delicate floral nuances adding to the impression of overall elegance. The palate is an intense amalgam of quince and citrus fruits backed-up by firm though balanced acid structure. It avoids the main problem with gewurz of becoming to sickly and blowsy and instead presents as rich...

Winemaker's notes- " Like a Middle Eastern bazaar, the intoxicatingly perfumed 2005 Cloudy Bay Gewurztraminer oozes the musky scent of oriental spices entwined with orange blossom and Turkish delight. Tinged with cardamom, the wine's voluptuous palate has the vibrancy of ripe citrus fruits with a brulée like creaminess ... finishing just off-dry with great intensity and length. "

This is the first ever white from Magpie, a partnership between Rolf Binder and UK wine merchant, Noel Young. You wouldn’t expect these guys to do anything too “mainstream”, so Gewurz is a good fit for this range. Great debut too. Lifted with alluring hints of citrus and lychee, and rich, clean, fresh and tangy on the palate.

Sorby Adams 2008 The GT Eden Valley Gewürztraminer was picked at full maturity to ensure the greatest concentration of varietal fruit character. A nice greenish tint. I didn't think it was particularly Traminer like but it did have a sort of root vegetable to it that could match up interestingly with a number of food items. It had good acid balance and that balance of flavours went very nicely with the dish. It was a structural characteristic that the intensity of the flavours in the wine and the intensity of the dish went together pretty nicely. However, not what I would consider to be a signature of Traminer.

Powerful, spicy Traminer aromatics. Very ripe. Excellent lychee flavours. Good low acidity and firm finish. Typical Gewurtz fashion. Very much a 'vendange tardive' style of Traminer. Richness and spice of the wine stood up to the dish, particularly if you had some coriander in your mouth. An excellent combination. Excellent wine.

Initially, some very slight dirtiness which gave the indication of slightly hot alcoholic terpene aromas, white asparagus and musk. It carried through on the palate with musk and a little bit of white tannin flavour without the mouth feel of white tannin. It wasn't high in alcohol which was sort of confusing on the palate, but the acidity was beautiful and crisp. The whole package was very good if a little bit green. The whole package, the wine, the nose and the palate worked in a strange way very...
