Restrained, leafy, meaty undergrowth-like aromas slightly overwhelm this wine's sweet mulberry, dark cherry and plum aromas, while dusty, cedary vanilla oak plays second fiddle. Reserved and elegant but lacking great length, with leafy capsicum notes marginally detracting from attractive cassis and plum flavours, finishing with hints of cool mint and menthol. 17.0/20 Jeremy Oliver January 2003

Crios means offspring (as in children). Susana selected a word to express the notion that these are wines that havent quite grown up to the same level of quality and maturity as her more expensive Susana Balbo label wines, but they receive the same loving care and attention throughout the winemaking process. The label features a series of three connected and overlapping hands, an image inspired by a Mayan artifact. The three hands represent Susana and her two children.

The Gimblett Road area of Hawke's Bay is synonymous with the production of world-renowned wines. From these much celebrated shingle soils, hails the region's most exciting boutique label: Squawking Magpie. The "cradle of quality" for Squawking Magpie is the Woodlands Vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels area, the first 4 hectares of which were planted in 1995. In 2002, a new 20 hectare vineyard was developed as a joint venture and planted predominantly in Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.

From our island neighbours this Syrah is showing ripe berry, white pepper and spicy oak flavours. It delivers plenty of flavour for the price and it's no surprise this family owned winery is one of the best.

Intense berry nose. Massive fruit. Lots of toasty oak, coffee, mocha. Still some red fruit and good firm acidity. A touch syrupy, but the sweetness seemed to complement the food. It was as if the syrupy, slightly confected character of the wine came more into balance. A good combination. A beautiful wine.

While many may think importing Syrah from the US is a bit 'coals to Newcastle', the style is distinctly different to our own Shiraz and offers a delicious style reminiscent of both the mineral and spice of the northern Rhone (maybe St Joseph) with the ripeness of the New World. It is thoroughly delicious wine and highly recommended. PWS

'This is a 100-point wine (non-blind). I can’t believe the concentration and richness it has, yet it remains fresh and balanced. Winemaker Manfred Krankl is a genius. This 2005 is the essence of Syrah with blackberry, chocolate, meat and gamy aromas that follow through to a full body, with ultravelvety tannins and a long, long, long finish. I don’t see any use in aging this wine, even though it will improve. It’s just so amazing now. It sort of reminds me of the first vintage of Guigal’s La Turque...

A deep rich burgundy hue and powerfully youthfully appearance. Rich sweet plums and blueberries, carrying with it some peppery spice from the Syrah. Soft rich and fruit driven. A great character of this wine is the lusciousness from the fruit which is not just coming from the sugar but from the rich ripeness of the fruit. This wine is excellent with chicken, spicy curries or serve as an entree. Maybe even chocolate. The Dolcetto and the Shiraz fruit is sourced from premium vineyards in South Eastern...

Rich, sweet blackberry and pie crust character. Highly appealing to the smell. The palate is chunky and rich with firm structure. It is unclear if it has a real depth of complexity at its core. It becomes somewhat dry and harsh with the food.

There is a lovely elegant spice aroma to this wine. The palate is soft and savoury with bright berry flavours giving it richness. The flavours linger and combine with the tannins to give a clean finish.

Really interesting nose. Pink and white peppercorns. Almost a meringue character like an egg white character on the nose with some lovely musk. A light palate. A little too light. It was a perfect foil and came in with this beautiful balance.

Australias favourite sweet red wine with aromas of berries, blackcurrant, red jubes and hints of spice are on the nose. The palate has flavours of ripe summer berries and a natural grape sweetness that is balanced by the frizzante mouth feel providing a refreshing and vibrant finish.
