The Omrah label was born in the late 80s from what at the time was a pioneering idea - at least within Australia - the Unwooded Chardonnay. The Chardonnay bubble had grown on the back of the white wine boom to become the most planted of all varieties in Australia. The use of oak during maturation was increasingly limited to specialised selections of the variety which could command higher prices. The Wairarapa region lies to the east of Wellington, centred on large terraces of river pebbles, and includes the famous Martinborough area. Vines growing on the poor soils of this bank produce grapes with concentrated flavour, in particular Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. The normally frostprone Wairarapa had a benign growing season and produced a large crop of healthy grapes in 2008. A few rain days during the harvest left early ripening varieties like sauvignon blanc largely unaffected.

Jack's Comments: It is sometimes hit and miss with the Australian Sauvignon Blanc's. Let me same the crew at Yalumba have hit the nail on the head with this excellent wine. It has wonderful ripe fruit characters while still being quite relaxed on the palate. Small packets of sweet fruit also arrive laying the foundation for a pineapple and passionfruit sensation. It finishes off nice and crisp with an exceptional clean finish.
