Air Purifiers Buying Guide

Clean air is always the mark of a healthy living environment; especially in our current society where the effects of climate change are always looming over our shoulders. Air purifiers  have become a great innovation in the past years; they are able to get rid of not only pollutants in the air but are also helpful to people suffering from allergies and asthma. There are many different types of air purifiers and our personal environment and preferences can help in deciding which one is the most beneficial.

What to Look For

  • A CADR, or clean air delivery rate, that can match the size of the room. The higher the CADR number, the larger the room it is suited for.  A CADR of 50 is appropriate for a room of 80 square feet, a CADR of 80 for 120 square feet, a CADR of 100 for 144 square feet, and a CADR of 200 for 320 square feet.
  • A High Efficiency Particulate Arresting filter is the best way to trap particles in the air. Only purifiers advertised as true HEPA filters are the real deal.
  • Electrostatic ionisers that can charge particles and make them fall on the ground or cling to furniture. They can create a by-product ozone which the consumer will have to risk breathing in.
  • A fan helps the purifier pull in more pollutants to be charged or filtered.
  • A filter monitor allows you to know when the filter needs to be changed. If the filter is not maintained, the purifier can become a polluting filter instead as it churns out all the particles it has collected over time. Filter monitors are usually visual or audio.
  • Find a purifier that has a noise level acceptable to you. Many purifiers depend on high fan speed which in turn can create quite a lot of noise.

Types of Air Purifiers

  • Whole house air cleaners  can filter an entire house and are quite useful for people with forced-air heating; however, they can be very expensive and require professionals to install them in the heating ducts of your home. High efficiency filters are used in some cleaners and others use electronic precipitators which can create ozone in the house and create discolouration in the walls.
  • Air filters  are the cheaper alternative to whole house air cleaners. They replace furnace filters in forced-air heating or cooling systems. Although they do not create ozone in the home, they are not as effective. They are made from charged pleated covers or fibreglass.
  • Room air purifiers  are much cheaper than whole house ones, plus they are portable and and use HEPA filters. They can have the same lung irritating effect as whole house cleaners for they too use electronic precipitators or ionic technology.

Purifying Techniques

  • Ultraviolet germicidal irritation: Air passes through UV light, which is a form of sterilisation. When placed at grainpans and cooling systems, these help keep places free of germs.
  • Filter-based purification: Traps particles through size exclusion, so they are ineffective against particles at 0.01 micrometer in size.
  • Activated carbon is a porous material that has the ability to absorb volatile chemicals. It cannot trap larger particles and is mainly used for turning gaseous particles into solid particles.
  • Photocatalytic oxidation limits the introduction of unconditioned air into building and in turn saves energy.
  • Ioniser purifiers charge electrical surfaces to attract particles to the filters.
  • Liquid Ioniser: Use a capillary that feeds liquid into an ionisation feed, which then acts as an ioniser.
  • Ozone generators create a very strong ozone atmosphere which oxidizes other particles. However, they can only be used in unoccupied rooms for they have proved to be very harmful to human beings.
