Australia Day

Australia has many holidays, but none can compare to the grandiosity of Australia Day. Also known as Anniversary Day and Foundation Day,  it is celebrated on January 26 as the official national holiday. It celebrates the landing of the First Fleet in Port Jackson in 1788 and is generally the most patriotic day for Australians. There are several different ways of celebrating Australia Day, but they are all very Australian in nature.

Ways To Celebrate

  • Attend one of the many official events held all around countries from fireworks to parades to award ceremonies for the Australians of the year.
  • Attend or have your own barbecue. A barbecue is a great way for people to gather and enjoy popular Australian cuisine. Get an electric grill  or a barbecue  and cook up endless varieties of seafood, steak, kangaroo, and even emu.
  • Go to the a pub and have a celebratory drink.
  • If you live near one of our many beaches, have a beach party. Cool down with an esky  full of rich Australian beer and enjoy the beautiful coastline.

Australian Colours

  • Face painting is one of the most popular ways of showing off your national pride on Australia Day. Using a washable face paint you can decorate your face with the colours of the Australian flag (red, white, and blue), the Aboriginal flag (black, red, and yellow), or the Torres Strait Islander flag (green, blue, and white).
  • It is also customary to fly the flag  outside your home. But do so according to the booklet on Australian flag protocol.
  • It is also common to wear clothing decorated with the Australian Union Jack and stars. Examples range from thongs  to t-shirts
  • A fun and popular way for children to join in is to wear Australian-based costumes such as a koala  or kangaroo mask

Australian Food

Find a good Australian recipe book  and make traditional Australian dishes.

  • Lamingtons are cube-shaped sponge cakes coated in chocolate and desiccated coconuts.
  • Meat pie contains minced meat and gravy and is considered to be Australia's national dish.
  • Pavlova is a meringue named after the ballet dancer Anna Pavlova who toured Australia in the 1920s.
  • Additionally, create Australian-themed foods such as biscuits using a koala-shaped cutter or a cake the shape of the country.

Australian Sports

Playing sports in the backyard or the park is a great way for the whole family to bond. Two sports are especially popular and especial to Australia.

  • Australian rules football is played in oval-shaped fields and is quite different from normal football. Any part of the body is allowed to advance the ball and specking (catching the ball high in the air) is considered a true spectacle feat.
  • Cricket is a traditionally English sport that has become popularised in Australia and has many avid fans who enjoy playing the game year-round.
