Bed Pillows Buying Guide

A good bed pillow  is essential for getting the rest and comfort you require each night.  Depending on your needs, there are different pillows that can be made out of various materials, designed specifically to help you drift off into slumber.  Firmness of pillows can range from soft to very firm, and the guide below offers an outline of options to help you experience extra comfort in your bed

Materials

Pillows can be filled with various materials depending on your preference.  Some pillows can have a mixture of fillers or will be stuffed with with one of the following:

  • Feathers : Most commonly down  feathers are used inside pillows, which are popular due to their comfort.  They are also sold in hypo-allergenic  models so that the filling does not irritate the user.
  • Latex Foam : Many pillows now use memory foam which remembers the way you rested your head the night before and melds to that shape the next time you use it.
  • Polyester : A pillow filled with polyester will have a bouncy and comfortable feel to it.

Pillowcases

Pillowcases  can be made out of just about any fabric.  Below, your three main options.

Cotton : One of the most commonly used pillow cases on the market, cotton offers comfort and breath-ability.  These pillowcases can be made from lighter materials to heavier sheet sets.

Satin : Some satin brands claim to eliminate wrinkles and puffiness on the face and help reduce "bed head" by maintaining moisture in the hair.

Silk :  Silk pillowcases are said to be great for anyone with sensitive skin, as they help relieve facial pressure at night.  They also help to soften hair.

Pillow Sizes

  • Euro size  : This size does not come with pillow cases to match, but they are ideal for comfortable use.
  • King size :  These fit on a king size bed  and they are the largest of all pillow  sizes; they may be too large and long for your preference.
  • Queen size :  As the name suggests, these fit perfectly on a queen size bed but there are no specific pillowcases designed to cover them.  However, a full size pillowcase can be used on a queen pillow.
  • Standard size :  The most common pillow size, just one is designed to fit on a the smallest of beds
  • Travel size  :  You can take these pillows on the go for neck and head support anywhere you travel.

Therapeutic Pillows

Anti Snoring : These pillows help to curb snoring by enhancing breathing and minimising facial pressure.

Maternity Pillows : Certain pillow shapes can provide support for mums-to-be; some offer cushioning for the stomach.

Supporting Pillows : Many pillows can support your back by improving circulation.  Some pillows will offer leg elevation while others can be used in-between legs for cushioning and straightening of the spine.
