Bluetooth Headsets Buying Guide

Bluetooth headsets are one of the most popular mobile phone accessories sold today. They allow you to make and receive calls just as if holding a mobile phone to your face, but without ever having to remove the device from your pocket. Furthermore, Australian law mandates the use of a hands-free device when talking on a mobile whilst driving. Headsets are now extremely small and lightweight, easy to use, and have sound quality just as good as the mobile phones themselves.

Headset Features

The feature sets on newer bluetooth headsets are impressively varied. Some models can play music  when paired with a music phone or bluetooth-compatible MP3 player, whilst other models have their own tiny screens to give you information without having to take out your mobile. Here are some other points to consider:

  • Mono vs. stereo: Most bluetooth headsets have speakers over one ear, allowing mono sound for talking on the phone. Some headsets resemble full headphones over both ears, or allow you to plug in headphones or earbuds adding the ability to listen to music in stereo.
  • Size: For the right price, you can purchase headsets that are extremely small but provide solid performance.
  • Comfort: Many headsets have rubber flaps that can be adjusted to the perfect shape to fit comfortably over any ear, while others have an unchangeable one-size-fits-all design. Make sure to buy a headset that won't be uncomfortable or distracting if you have to wear it or prolonged periods of time, such as for long conversations or whilst driving.
  • Battery: Bluetooth headsets feature rechargeable batteries. Check the battery life of your headset and the manner in which it charges to make sure that you won't run out of power.
  • Screen: Usually found on higher-end models, a screen can be a nice feature that allows you to check information about music, use Caller ID, or adjust settings without having to use the phone itself.
  • Volume Controls: Models that feature volume controls allow you to adjust call or music volume directly from the headset so your mobile can remain undisturbed.
  • Multipoint Pairing: Models with multipoint pairing are extremely easy to sync to a bluetooth device.
