Boxing Day
Boxing Day is celebrated on December 26, the day after Christmas, by all nations of the Commonwealth, such as the United Kingdom, Canada, and of course Australia. For most people, Boxing Day is about getting a good deal, for most shops will have their items on sale in order to deplete Christmas merchandise. But what makes Boxing Day special in Australia is that it marks the beginning of two very large sporting events: the Sydney to Hobart yacht races and the Boxing Day Test.
Sydney to Hobart Yacht Races
- It is a handicapped race that started in 1945 and draws hundreds of contestants from around the world.
- The course for the Sydney to Hobart yacht race runs from Sydney down the east coast of New South Wales and Victoria, crosses Bass Strait, and then the eastern coast of Tasmania southwards into the Tasman Sea to Tasman Island, across Storm Bay, and ends at Battery Point in Hobart.
- It is a dangerous 630 nautical mile route that pits the sailor against wind and waves.
- To participate in one of the most famous ocean races in the world, information can be found at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia in Sydney.
Boxing Day Test
- Test matches are cricket matches that last for 5 days.
- The Boxing Day test takes place at the famous Melbourne Cricket Grounds and pits an Australian team against one of the international touring teams.
- Boxing Day test tickets can be purchased in advance.
