Cat Carriers Buying Guide

Cat carriers  are not only convenient, but somewhat of a necessity. Many a cat have escaped from cardboard boxes on their way to the vet. Jet-setters who don't want to leave their cat at home should definitely invest in a carrier. There are many types of carriers on the market. It's important to know the best type for your needs.

How to Choose a Cat Carrier

  • Usage: One of the most deciding factors in choosing a carrier is determining how much you'll use it. Are you just taking your cat to the vet once a year? Will you be taking your cat on planes a few times a year? Or maybe you want to look stylish and hit the town with Fluffy. Figure out what exactly the carrier will be used for. Many carriers are specifically made to comply with airline regulations, while others can be wheeled and are great for train trips. If you just need a carrier a few times a year for simple trips to the vet's office, buy a simple in-hand carrier
  • Size:  This is especially important if you're looking to buy a carrier for a kitten. A small and stylish over-the-shoulder carrier may be great now, but chances are you're cat will quickly out grow it. Look for a carrier that your cat will grow into. If you have multiple cats that travel well together, try buying an extra-large carrier  (which normally is only an option for those simple in-hand carriers).
  • Safety: This is hands-down the most important factor in choosing a carrier. Many over-the-shoulder carriers have a Velcro opening that can be pushed open even by a kitten. Look for durable material, strong zippers, and heavy locks.
  • Comfort: Carriers should be comfortable for you and your cat. If a carrier has a hard bottom, place a towel  or blanket  on the bottom. Over the shoulder bags, roller carriers  and sling front carriers are usually more comfortable for carrying pets for long distances. Make sure in-hand carriers have a plastic handle and not a thin metal handle. Thin metal handles will have your hands aching in about 20 seconds.
  • Personality: Get fancy with your carrier! Even the simplest carrier can be personalized. Is your kitty cat a total diva? Put a tiara sticker  on the front of the carrier. Get creative!
