Dinnerware Buying Guide
Dinnerware
can come in a variety of patterns and colours. Depending on your budget, you can purchase some plate sets
for everyday use and others for dinner parties
or special occasions. See our guide below for more details.
Everyday
Purchasing everyday dinnerware can be just as important as buying the nicer stuff. A few things to keep in mind:
- Design: Pick a pattern or design that you really like. Remember, you're going to have to look at this dish ware
everyday, so if you're not sure about the purchase you are making, wait until you find something you really want.
- Durability: Make sure your everyday dinnerware can be washed in the dishwasher
and will last through constant use.
- Sets: When buying a set, consider how many pieces you will need. If you have a small family or it is just you, you may only need a 4 piece set. If you plan on entertaining, consider purchasing a few sets. Most basic sets contain bowls,
plates
and cups.
- Price: A nice set should not be too cheap, nor too expensive. Good pieces will range in the $40-80 price area.
Special Occasions
Whether you are having people over to your house or just making a special dinner for your loved one, sometimes you might want to use the fancy dinnerware. Just remember that caring for nicer, more expensive dishes is a little bit different from your everyday brands. See the tips below.
- When washing antique
or vintage dish ware, always clean by hand gently and use warm, soapy water.
- If you choose to hand wash your glassware
or crystal,
put a rubber mat
or dish towel
on the bottom of the sink so it won't break if it drops.
- Most modern dinnerware can be washed in the dishwasher,
but be sure to load it so that flatware
is separated from fine china.
- Sometimes nicer dishes, especially stoneware, can pick up metallic streaks. Use a mild abrasive to clean these off.
- If a plate or cup has metal trim, it should never be put in the dishwasher as it can cause problems for the machine.
- When storing fine dish ware, try to store cups on hooks and use cloth, paper towels or dish protectors between plates and bowls.
