Old New Borrowed and Blue

Initially beginning as a European custom, it is traditional for the bride  to carry something old, new, borrowed and blue  on her wedding  day to bring good luck, wealth and health to the new couple. Whether or not you are particularly superstitious, this may be a tradition that your family has carried out that you may want to continue. Below, some ideas that will help you prepare for the big day.

Something Old

Specifically this refers to something that will remind the bride of her old life and her family.

Jewellery

Many families have jewellery that has been passed down through generations, so this may be your best bet. Whether it be a necklace earrings or a bracelet you are sure to find something that accents your dress and upholds tradition.

Wedding Veil

This can be a dress from your mother, grandmother, or anyone who raised you as family. If you need to make the veil longer or shorter, you can always have a few alterations done for yourself.

Headpiece

Though traditionally an old item would come from a family member, if you are coming up blank on ideas, vintage headpieces can be purchased at a bridal store  or online.

Photograph

If you're able to, carry around an old photograph of you as a child, or with your family, along with other items you put in your purse  for the wedding day.

Something New

This item is supposed to represent a successful and fortunate future for the bride and groom.

Wedding Dress

Most brides prefer to buy a new dress for the big day and not wear a secondhand garment. Purchasing your own dress means that it will be fitted and adjusted to your size, so consider if this is something you want to do.

Wedding Ring

Sometimes wedding rings are passed down through generations, but typically couples like to purchase their own set in the style of your choosing.

Wedding Shoes

Shoes are another item that will probably be purchased for the wedding day anyway, so why not count this in your "new" category?

Hosiery

Usually the bride needs to purchase stockings or a comfortable bra that will wear well underneath her new dress.

Something Borrowed

For this category, it is customary to wear something that a previous and currently happy bride has worn at her own wedding to bring good luck to the union. However, always make sure you return the item the next day, otherwise, the tradition won't uphold.

Honeymoon

Why not borrow a friend's timeshare or condo to stay at for your honeymoon? Besides a decreased cost, you will already know that you are getting a good deal.

Wedding Song

You may want to pick out your own wedding song, but your parents or grandparents might have a song you want to use also. It can even be a newer remake of the same song if the other version is too old for you.

Cake Knife

Borrow a relative or friend's knife to cut your wedding cake.

Book

Depending on the nature of your ceremony, borrow a prayer book or a regular book for the readings that take place during your wedding.

Something Blue

This tradition comes from biblical times when wearing something blue represented purity and fidelity.

Blue Garter

This is the most common way to incorporate blue into the wedding day. A garter with a blue stripe or an all blue garter can be worn easily underneath your wedding dress.

Blue Flowers

Depending on the theme of your wedding, you can have all blue flowers or just include a few in your bouquet  or reception  set up.

Blue Lingerie

You will most likely buy lingerie for the wedding night, so why not make it blue?

Blueberries

These can be used as part of the centrepieces at the receptions or even in the champagne  while making the wedding toast -it gives your bubbly a nice flavour!

The Tradition of the Sixpence

The original rhyme that brought on this spirit of tradition is the verse below:

Something old, something new

Something borrowed, something blue,

And silver sixpence in your shoe.

As a result, the final piece of this tradition includes wearing a silver sixpence  inside your left shoe on the wedding day as a symbol of monetary and emotional wealth. If you haven't come across a sixpence in your travels lately, don't worry, they can be purchased online specifically for weddings.
