Painting Supplies

Even after years of practising art, I still find new and exciting paint tools when I go into the art store. In a spacey delight, I walk through the aisles and trick myself into thinking that a paint knife  is the latest technology in art supply--though I have to admit it is quite similar to the ordinary kitchen knife I had being using prior. Although my discoveries may not be new, they provide a good example of the great paint materials available. Build up your paint kit with some of the fun things I have stumbled across during my shopping adventures:

Materials and Accessories

Paints

You can't very well paint without paint. Choose which type is right for you by looking through the descriptions in our Paint Guide

Artist's Paint Brushes 

Since brushes come in many shapes, materials, and sizes it may be hard to choose the right one. Check out our paint brush guide for some help with choosing. 

Canvas

Canvas can come in canvas boards canvas rolls or stretched canvas Or you may buy canvas paper  especially designed to suit your paint of choice.

Easels 

Easels provide a nice, firm backboard upon which to work. They are available in free standing  (French  or field  easels), bench models, and table top  models, and most models feature storage compartments for your work materials. 

Painting Knives 

Painting knives are ideal for placing thick color application to the canvas. They are often used in mountain, stream, and lake painting techniques.

Airbrushes 

Airbrushes are great for applying paint to backgrounds and other large surfaces. They create little to no mess and provide great colour application.

Sponges 

Paint sponges are good for blending colours and adding texture, especially when dealing with watercolour paints 

Nibs 

Nibs are often used in calligraphy  and ink  drawing, but they can also be used with paint. They give the artist precise control when painting fine details.

Colour Dusters 

These brushes are excellent for stippling inks and paints onto your artwork. They can be used for shading and background techniques, and with stencils

Paint Eraser 

With this tool. the artist can add or remove wet paint from a surface to erase mistakes, add highlights, or create texture.

(Empty) Paint Containers 

These containers allow you to store all the custom colours you have mixed yourself--because you know you are never going to be able to recreate that colour.

Painting Palettes 

Plastic  and glass  paint palettes allow you to mix colours without absorbing the paint pigment. They also make handling paints easier and neater.
