Grown to Brown Brothers vineyards and blended with Syrah, served slightly chilled and spritzy, it makes a sensational aperitif, and all occasion refresher. A versatile partner to a wide range of foods including pizza or cajun fish, this lively wine is generous with ripe summer berry characters, offers a touch of residual...

Two bays and Bass Straight bound The Mornington Peninsula, in the most southeastern part of mainland Australia. The Box Stallion vineyards, positioned in the middle of this region enjoy a maritime climate with long gentle summers and good ripening weather extending as late as May. The rolling hills with good northerly exposure produce low yields of high quality fruit, which is then lovingly processed to become distinctive, cool climate wines of exceptional bouquet and pallet.

The humble Dolcetto grape has often been coined as the ‘little sweet one,’ in general terms they are made as a very easy drink (sometimes too easy). With this wine though Luca Carrado and the Vietti team have taken this grape to another level, bringing out a darker and to some extent a more sinister style… but not too serious though. With low acidity and soft tannins this wine is enticing and very exciting.

Lifted, black cherry aromatics. An interesting nose. Very smooth. Quite tart, ripe cherry characters and an absolutely fantastic acidity. Long, well balanced wine and very good in the context of food. It became slightly sweeter with the food, but structurally, it was just perfect, the acidity cutting through and outlining the fatty characters in the dish itself.

Bright ruby-red. Primary aromas of berries and bitter chocolate. Juicy, sweet and fruit-driven, in a lively but essentially easygoing style. Nothing exaggerated about the berry and licorice flavors. A subtle, graceful dolcetto, finishing with firm but pliant tannins and good length. The label lists a very moderate 13% alcohol. STEPHEN TANZER

My most recent visit with Bruno Giacosa in May 2008 was illuminating, as we spent the afternoon tasting through all of his 2005s, 2006s, and 2007s. It was also my first visit to the estate since the departure of long-time oenologist Dante Scaglione. Change can be difficult, but it can also be energizing, and I hope that will be the case here. I will have more to say about Giacosa and his new releases in Issue 179. Unfortunately, price increases and a weakening US dollar have pushed many of the wines...
