French Wine Duo

We know Australian wine is marvellous, but that French stuff isn't half-bad either. This duo of French wine would be welcomed by any wine connoisseur or is an enjoyable way to taste the difference between a good French and a good local red. (You may find the French ones lighter than a full-bodied Aussie red.) The Cotes Du Rhone 2007 from Perrrin, is a mix of Grenache, Syrah and Mouvedre. The Bourgogne Rouge 2005 is a Pinot Noir from Joseph Faiveley. Both are ready to drink now, but can be cellared...

D'Arenberg 'The Noble Rhone' Reisling

d'Arenberg's wines of the 1960's gained immediate cult status amongst imbibers and judges. One Cabernet Sauvignon won a Jimmy Watson Trophy at the 1969 Royal Melbourne Wine Show and another Grenache - based wine was awarded 7 trophies and 29 gold medals from Australian capital city wine shows. It is understandable that by the 1970's d'Arenberg Wines had become very fashionable and had gained significant national and international profiles in less than 20 years.

Wine: Charge your glasses

Some principles should govern your hunt. The most age-worthy wines are those with a distinguished history, such as the great red wines of Bordeaux, Burgundy, the Rhône and Australia, the barolos or barbarescos of Piedmont, the fortifieds of Portugal and Australia, and our sparkling shiraz. The sweet wines of Sauternes (Chateau d’Yquem), the Loire (Moulin Touchais) and Germany are best for lovers of white grapes. The quality of the vintage is crucial; if you were born in 1963, look to Portugal or...

Penfolds Grange - Red Wine Clinic (1971)

This wine is a blend of 87 per cent Shiraz and 13 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon and created a sensation when it won gold and topped its class at the Gault-Millau Wine Olympiad in Paris in 1979, beating the best Rhone Valley wines. It also won a trophy, four gold, four silver and five bronze medals at Australian wine shows between 1971 and 1982. ‘If you had to point to a wine which fulfilled all the ambitions of Grange, it would have to be 1971,’ said Max Schubert in 1993. ‘It was a great wine from...

Spicy wine. Big and mouth filling but not too hard or aggressive. Good length

Solid fruit. Slightly salty oak but big, powerful fruit. Obviously ripe with a nice sort of muddy, Rhone like complexity. Savoury palate. Lots of fruit on the palate but gave the impression of a prune juice sort of character. Very ripe, very sweet, very big but complete with the food. Overall a good package.

Auguste Clape Syrah Cote Du Rhone (2007) - East End Cellars, Fine Wine Retailers
Huge wine. It worked, but it would have been even better with some more robust style of food to accompany it

This is an interesting wine. You get this mulchy compost fruit in Shiraz from that year along with some toasty charred oak. It's like charred vegetables. It looks raw, spicy and a little bit Rhone like in the glass as it sat. Quite attractive in its way. Not very deep in flavour. It has some style about it. Some appeal, some charm, some balance and I enjoyed it with the food.
