This wine was a pleasure to judge. It had the typical spicy red berry compote fruit on the nose but still retained some savoury characters. On the palate it had lovely concentrated fruit and fresh acidity. It was intense but still retained a sense of lightness and finished with a firm tannic grip. The savoury character of this wine complemented the food. The acidity cleansed the palate but the wine retained its personality throughout.

"This wine displays all the hallmarks of classic McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon – blackcurrant, chocolate with a hint of herbaceousness delivered on a rich palate of dense, firm tannins. But JR Gantos loves his port, and couldn’t help adding a dash (5%) of Touriga Nacional, which gives a varietal floral lift. St Estephe on steroids meets the Douro!"
