Editor's Opinion

I don't know about you, but I hate clutter. It looks untidy, it gathers dust, and it wastes space. Every now and then I like to have a big clean out of all my things. I go through my old clothes, my cupboards, my desk, everything. it's a tough job, but by the end of it, everything is looking a lot cleaner. Not only that, but I sometimes come across items I thought I had "lost". The hard part is actually finding the time to do the clean. It can be a pretty big job, even if you're not too untidy. Whether you need to clean a tiny apartment or a four bedroom home, this guide is going to took take a look at some of the ways you can get rid of the clutter in your household. So pull out your feather duster and get ready to work, because your home will be neater in no time.

Where Will The Clutter Go?

They say that one man's trash is another man's treasure. Do you have some items amongst your clutter that you just can't bear to throw in the bin? Are there clothes in your closet that haven't been worn for decades? When I start going through all my items, one of four things can happen.

I Will Keep The Item

The whole point of the clean out is to get rid of clutter, so items you keep should be minimal. You don't want to become a hoarder, so sometimes it's best to say goodbye to some of your old belongings. Items you keep should have sentimental purpose, or be items you are going to use.

The Item Is Going In The Bin

If the item can't be used by anyone and serves no purpose, it goes in the bin. These items are usually damaged, old, or filthy.  All you're going to need is some garbage rubbish bags  and you're set to dispose of them.

I'm Going To Sell The Item

If you're looking to make a quick buck, you might want to sell your clutter. These items are usually ones that are in great condition, but aren't useful to you any more. You might choose to sell them to friends, sell them online, or at a garage sale.

I'm Going To Donate

Clothing, furniture, and stuffed animals are great for donation. There are many great charities in Australia, so you know that your old items are making a big difference in someone's life. Only donate items that are in a good condition.

 Worthy Charities In Australia

Are you stuck deciding on a worthy charity? We've compiled a list to help you make your decision.
  • Camp Quality: A charity that helps out families with children dealing with cancer.
  • Red Cross Australia: The red cross provide support for people when times get tough. They help out people locally and overseas.
  • The Salvation Army: Although focused around Jesus Christ and the Christian way of life, the Salvos strive to help those in need without discrimination.
  • Saint Vincent De Paul: Although religious based, St Vinnies are committed to helping the less fortunate.
  • The Smith Family: The Smith family is a charity that focuses on disadvantaged children. This includes helping children living in poverty.
Tips For Throwing A Garage Sale

If you plan on selling your items through a garage sale, here are some helpful tips.
  • Ensure you are 100% comfortable selling your items. Don't have second thoughts.
  • You need to promote the garage sale. Placing signs along major roads and on community notice boards can make a big difference.
  • If you want to get rid of clutter, sell items at a cheap price. The cheaper an item, the more likely it will sell.
  • Let your friends know, as you might be selling an item that they would love to purchase off you.
  • If possible, set up the sale out the front of your home. This will attract locals who are passing by.
  • Aim to get rid of all the items by the end of the sale. This could mean offering specials or deals that will encourage people to purchase more.
