Mascaras Buying Guide

Mascara  can do lots of things for your eyes, and fortunately, there are so many types out there that you are guaranteed to find at least one that will give you the look you want.

Coloured : A variety of shades are offered for whatever mood you're in: purple, blue, brown, grey. Pick a colour that will enhance the natural pigment of eyes.

Lengthening : The longer wand enables you to get more mascara on the tips of your lashes.

No-Clump : Plastic wands and silk or gel formulas help this mascara to glide on easily and smoothly.

Thickening : This mascara utilises wax and paraffin  formulas to thicken lashes.

Waterproof : This can come in handy in the rain or during those sweaty summer days. Just keep in mind that while it has lasting power, it may be harder to remove.

Top Picks

Many mascaras can accomplish multiple tasks in one brush. Here are some top brands to consider that won't break the bank.

Mascara Wands

  • There are three different styles:
    • Crescent Wand: Its curved shape allows for better curling of the lashes.
    • Fat/Bristly Wand: Helps to thicken lashes with smaller, chunkier bristles.
    • Spiral Wand: Comes in most mascaras on the market. Contain long and short bristles to define and reach all lashes.

Applying Mascara: Tips

  • Using a spoolie  (clean wand) on lashes directly after applying mascara will help maintain definition.
  • Primer mascaras  can add volume and length to your eye makeup.
  • A coat of foundation  under the lower lid before applying will aid in avoiding smudging and raccoon eyes.
  • Lash combs  are helpful for separating your lashes after application.
  • Eyelash curlers  can enhance the look of lashes, but make sure to use them before applying.
  • Wiping your mascara wand  on a tissue before using may eliminate clumps.
  • When applying, there's no need to pump the wand into the mascara tube repeatedly. Once will do the trick--otherwise, the product can dry out quickly.
